Mary Jo Foley นักข่าวสายไมโครซอฟท์จาก ZDNet เผยข้อมูลวงในล่าสุดของ "Threshold" ระบบปฏิบัติการรุ่นหน้าที่น่าจะเรียกว่า Windows 9 ดังนี้

Threshold จะเน้นฟีเจอร์ใหม่ๆ สำหรับผู้ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เดสก์ท็อปมากขึ้น และจะเดินรอยตาม Windows 8.1 Update ที่เลือกเปิดบางฟีเจอร์ตามประเภทของอุปกรณ์ (เช่น บนเดสก์ท็อปจะมีปุ่มปิดเครื่องแยก, บนแท็บเล็ตไม่มี) เป้าหมายของ Threshold คือแก้ไขความผิดพลาดของ Windows 8 ในเรื่อง usability
สำหรับอุปกรณ์ที่ทำงานได้ทั้งโหมดเดสก์ท็อปและแท็บเล็ต (เช่น Lenovo Yoga หรือ Surface Pro) ผู้ใช้สามารถสลับโหมดได้ระหว่างโหมด Metro รันแอพเต็มหน้าจอ หรือโหมดแสดงแอพเป็นหน้าต่าง
Threshold เวอร์ชันที่ใช้สำหรับมือถือ-แท็บเล็ต (Mobile SKU) จะไม่มีเดสก์ท็อปแบบที่เราคุ้นเคยติดมาด้วย แต่ยังรองรับการรันแอพหลายตัวบนหน้าจอเดียวกันพร้อมกัน
Threshold เวอร์ชันเดสก์ท็อป (Desktop SKU) จะมี Start Menu ตัวใหม่ตามที่ไมโครซอฟท์เคยเอามาโชว์ และสามารถรันแอพ Metro ในหน้าต่างได้
ไมโครซอฟท์น่าจะออก Threshold รุ่น public preview ช่วงฤดูใบไม้ร่วงของปี 2014 แต่ก่อนหน้านั้นจะออก Windows 8.1 Update 2 ตามข่าวก่อนหน้านี้ ช่วงที่ออกน่าจะเป็นเดือนสิงหาคม
มุมมองภายในไมโครซอฟท์เองนั้นเลิกสนใจ Windows 8.x แล้ว โดย Update 2 จะเป็นอัพเดตตัวสุดท้าย และทีมงานภายในหันไปทำ Threshold เต็มตัวแทนแล้ว

It's worth pointing out the Mini Start menu is expected to be customizable. Users will be able to include Metro-Style apps wor remove all Metro Style apps/tiles from the menu so that only Desktop apps are included in the Mini Start menu -- either as tiles or in list form.

ไมโครซอฟท์พยายามให้ผู้ใช้อัพเกรดจาก Windows 7 เป็น Windows 7 SP1 และ Windows 8 เป็น Windows 8.1 Update เพื่อให้ผู้ใช้พร้อมอัพเกรดไป Threshold นอกจากนั้น ณ เวลานี้ Threshold น่าจะเป็นอัพเกรดฟรีจาก Windows 8.1 Update และอาจรวมถึง Windows 7 SP1 ด้วย

The Microsoft OS team is hoping to get as many Windows 7 users moved to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8 users to Windows 8.1 Update in preparation for (hopefully) getting them to move to Threshold once it is out. It's still early in the Windows development cycle for Microsoft to have decided on packaging, pricing and distribution, but my sources say, at this point, that Windows Threshold is looking like it could be free to all Windows 8.1 Update and maybe even Windows 7 Service Pack 1 users.

ถ้าซื้อ Surface Pro 3 ที่(น่าจะ)กำลังมาปลายปีนี้ มันจะได้อัพเป็น Threshold กับเค้ามั้ยเนี่ย

น่าจะได้อยู่แล้วนะครับ ไม่ตกรุ่นง่ายๆ หรอกสำหรับ x86

เรื่องอัพเกรดได้เนี่ยผมคิดว่าคงได้ เพราะสเปคมันคงไม่ต้องการอะไรเว่อร์
แต่กลัวว่าจะไม่ใช่การอัพเกรดฟรีเนี่ยสิครับ ทั้ง ๆ ที่สินค้าเพิ่งซื้อไม่นาน
ถ้าเกิน 1 ปี ก็พอจะรับได้อยู่ถ้าค่าอัพเกรดไม่เกิน 2000 บาท

"เน้นฟีเจอร์ใหม่ๆ สำหรับผู้ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เดสก์ท็อปมากขึ้น" โอ้วพระเจ้า ออกเร็วๆเลย เดี๋ยวตัวจริงออกแล้วฉันจะ upgrade จาก 8.1 ไปตัวใหม่ทันทีเลยจอร์จ ไม่ไหวจะเคลียร์ ปกติใช้ Windows ใหม่ปรับตัวไม่นานก็โอเคละ แต่ 8 นี่ไม่ไหวจริงๆ ไม่ได้เอาใจ desktop เลย
