AlmaLinux ประกาศแนวทางใหม่ ไม่รักษาความเข้ากันได้กับ RHEL 100% แล้ว

AlmaLinux โครงการลินุกซ์ที่สร้างขึ้นทดแทน CentOS ประกาศแนวทางว่าจะไม่เอาเรื่องเข้ากันได้กับ RHEL ได้แบบ 100% ทดแทนได้แบบ 1:1 แล้ว แต่จะรักษาความเข้ากันได้ในระดับ Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatible คือแอพที่สร้างมารันบน RHEL จะสามารถรันบน AlmaLinux ได้อย่างไม่มีปัญหา

AlmaLinux บอกว่าผู้ใช้ทั่วไปจะไม่ได้รับผลกระทบมากนัก เพราะจะยังได้รับแพตช์ความปลอดภัยในเวลารวดเร็วเช่นเดิม รันแอพที่ออกแบบมาบน RHEL ได้เหมือนเดิม แต่จะไม่เหมือนกับ RHEL เป๊ะๆ ชนิดบั๊กต่อบั๊กอีกแล้ว ข้อดีของแนวทางนี้คือ AlmaLinux อาจแก้บั๊กได้เร็วกว่า RHEL ด้วยซ้ำ และการแก้บั๊กของ AlmaLinux จะเพิ่มคอมเมนต์ในซอร์สโค้ดด้วยว่านำแพตช์มาจากที่ใด ช่วยให้โครงการโปร่งใสมากขึ้น

แนวทางของ AlmaLinux คล้ายกับ Oracle Linux และ SUSE ที่ประกาศ fork แยกสายการพัฒนาจาก RHEL โดยไม่ต้องใช้โค้ดเหมือนกัน 100% อีกต่อไป

ขอถามคนที่ใช้ RHEL หน่อยครับ
คือมันเป็น *nix ที่เสียเงินใช่ไหมครับ แล้ว requirement ไหนที่จำเป็นต้องใช้ครับ
เพราะว่าตอนนี้ก็ใช้ Ubuntu/CentOS อยู่เลยสงสัยว่ามันมีงานอะไรที่ต้องเป็น Red Hat Enterprise
แล้วพวก command นี่เหมือนกับ *nix ไหม

อยากรู้เหมือนกันว่าใช้งานไหน เคยคิดจะซื้อแต่พอมาดู license ปีนึงไม่ต่างจากซื้อ Winserver ครั้งเดียว(จนหมด EOL)

เคยเห็นชอบถามกันเยอะ ขอตอบตามนี้ครับ ไทยปนอังกฤษเยอะ ต้องขออภัย

พวกโปรแกรมที่ใช้ในองค์กรใหญ่ๆ เช่นพวก EMS (entity management system) ของพวกอุปกรณ์ telecom จะ support เฉพาะพวก enterprise linux (RHEL, SLES) ถ้าใช้ตัวอื่น ก็ลงไม่ได้ หรือถึงแก้ให้ลงได้ก็ไม่รับ support พอพวกบริษัทซื้ออุปกรณ์พวกนี้มาพร้อม RHEL แล้วหมด subscription linux แล้วไม่อยากซื้อ subscription เมื่อก่อนก็สามารถเปลี่ยนไปใช้พวก CentOS (ก่อน v.8) ต่อได้

องค์กรณ์จะสนใจพวก SLA ต้องมี commitment ว่าจะมี neutralize, workaround, fix bug เมื่อไร ซึ่ง RHEL จะมีพวกนี้ให้

RHEL การ test ก่อน release ก็ดีกว่า community linux มาก หรือแม้แต่กับ ubuntu เอง ผมยังไม่เคยเจอว่า update package แล้วพัง (เคยมีข่าว ubuntu update package แล้วทำ azure ล่มไป)

สุดท้ายเรื่อง bug-for-bug compatible นี้ก็เรื่องสำคัญสำหรับ enterprise proprietary software เพราะถ้ามันไม่มี bug ใน RHEL แต่มันเกิดเฉพาะใน linux ตัวที่ fork มา vender ก็ไม่ support แก้ bug ให้แน่นอน ซึ่งมันสูญเสียกับธุรกิจครับ

ถ้าเป็นแค่ hobby หรือธุรกิจที่ความเสียหายเวลามี bug แล้วเราแก้เองไม่ได้ น้อยกว่าค่า subscription ก็ไม่จำเป็นต้องซื้อ RHEL ครับ แต่บางงานก็ไม่อยากให้ director หรือ CTO มาคุยกับเราบ่อยๆ ก็ต้องยอมจ่ายครับ :)
