Epic Games ยอมนำเกมฮิตแห่งยุค Fortnite มาเปิดให้ดาวน์โหลดผ่าน Google Play Store แล้ว หลังเปิดตัวเวอร์ชัน Android ในปี 2018 และยืนยันไม่ลง Play Store เพราะไม่ต้องการจ่ายส่วนแบ่งรายได้ให้กูเกิล

การกลับลำของ Epic Games ครั้งนี้ต้องเรียกว่ายอม "กัดฟัน" ทำ เพราะมาพร้อมกับเสียงวิจารณ์กูเกิลว่า ตั้งใจบีบให้ซอฟต์แวร์ที่ติดตั้งแบบ sideload มีข้อจำกัดมากมาย เช่น แสดงป๊อปอัพเตือนว่าซอฟต์แวร์เหล่านี้ไม่ปลอดภัย, บล็อคการติดตั้งผ่าน Google Play Protect รวมถึงบีบผ่านทางสัญญากับผู้ผลิตมือถือหรือโอเปอเรเตอร์ด้วย

Google puts software downloadable outside of Google Play at a disadvantage, through technical and business measures such as scary, repetitive security pop-ups for downloaded and updated software, restrictive manufacturer and carrier agreements and dealings, Google public relations characterizing third party software sources as malware, and new efforts such as Google Play Protect to outright block software obtained outside the Google Play store.

Epic ยังคงโมเดลการติดตั้ง Fortnite นอก Play Store ต่อไปเช่นเดิม และเรียกร้องให้กูเกิลปรับเปลี่ยนนโยบายเรื่องการติดตั้งแอพบน Android ให้เปิดกว้างมากขึ้น

เมื่อต้นปีนี้ Tim Sweeney ซีอีโอของ Epic ขึ้นพูดที่งาน The Game Awards ก็กล่าวโจมตีกูเกิลในลักษณะเดียวกัน

เหตุผลหนึ่งที่ทำให้ Epic ต้องยอมกูเกิลในช่วงนี้ น่าจะมาจากโครงการ Advanced Protection ของ Android ที่ห้ามลงแอพแบบ sideload อย่างสมบูรณ์ และบังคับเปิด Google Play Protect ให้สแกนเครื่อง ทำให้การติดตั้ง Fortnite นอกสโตร์ไม่สามารถทำได้เลย
