AWS โซน US-EAST-1 ขัดข้อง ทำ Canva, Slack, Roblox, Perplexity และหลายบริการออนไลน์ล่ม

Amazon Web Services หรือ AWS ยืนยันปัญหาระบบขัดข้องขนาดใหญ่ในโซน US-EAST-1 ซึ่งปัญหานี้กระทบกับการเปิดเคสผ่าน AWS Support Center ด้วย โดย AWS รับทราบปัญหาตั้งแต่เวลา 14:11น. ตามเวลาในไทย

ผลกระทบนี้ทำให้บริการออนไลน์ยอดนิยมหลายตัวไม่สามารถใช้งานได้ด้วยทั้ง Canva, Slack, Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Perplexity และอีกมากมาย (ดูเพิ่มได้ที่หน้าแรกของ Downdetector) ในประเทศไทยแท็ก #Canvaล่ม ก็ขึ้นเทรนด์ไปเรียบร้อย

AWS อัปเดตสถานะล่าสุด ณ ขณะที่รายงานว่ากำลังแก้ไขปัญหา โดยต้นเหตุมาจากบริการ DynamoDB เป็นหลัก โดยจะอัปเดตอีกครั้งภายใน 16:00น. หรือเร็วกว่า

us-east-1 เป็น region แรกที่ถูกสร้าง และเป็น region ที่มักจะ roll out ตัว feature ที่แรก ถ้าพังก็พังที่แรก และเป็น region ที่ใหญ่ที่สุด และคนเอาระบบขึ้นฝั่ง US ก็มักใช้ที่นี่เป็นหลัก เพราะ resource รองรับเยอะที่สุดด้วย อีกอย่าง console หลาย ๆ ตัวก็ใช้ที่นี่เป็นที่หลัก อย่าง health dashboard ตอนช่วงแรกๆ ก็เข้าไม่ได้

บางทีผมก็ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไมถึงไม่ Rollout feature ทุกๆ Region ไปใช้งานเลย ไม่ต้องกั๊ก หรือเปิดให้ทดสอบใช้งานในหลายๆ Region

มันจะได้ไม่ต้องไปกองรวมกันแบบนี้ อะไรๆ ก็ไปรวมอยู่ที่เดียวก่อนกระจายไปที่อื่น ไม่แปลกเลยที่ส่วนใหญ่จะเอาระบบไปขึ้นที่นั่นซะเยอะ แบบนี้ก็ไม่ได้ต่างอะไรกับการตั้ง Server ธรรมดาที่ไม่มี DR site เลยนะสิ

ว่าแต่ Cloud provider เจ้าใหญ่ๆแบบนี้ เค้ามีโซน Infra สำหรับรันบริการที่เน้นไม่ให้ระบบล่มหรือทำให้โอกาสต่ำที่สุดรึเปล่าครับ โดยแลกกับเซอร์วิสที่รันแบบจำกัดฟีเจอร์ ไม่เพิ่มฟีเจอร์บ่อยๆ คล้ายๆที่ Debian ทำกับ OS

คือเข้าใจแหละว่าถ้าเป็นกรณี Hardware พัง ก็เป็นเหตุสุดวิสัยจริงๆ แต่อย่างน้อย ก็ลดความเสี่ยงจากการอัพเกรดฟีเจอร์ใหม่ๆลง

การออกแบบของ AWS เบื้องต้นใน 1 region มีหลาย AZ (available zone) หรือ หลายๆ IDC ตัวอย่างเช่น SG มี 3 AZ

ถ้าเราเปิดใช้ managed services ที่รองรับ multi-AZ มันก็ switch ไป AZ อื่นได้ ซึ่งเราต้องใช้งานผ่าน domain ของ managed services เพื่อย้าย IP ไปยัง AZ ที่ยังทำงานได้อยู่

แต่ในเคสข้างบนคือทั้ง region มันล่มไป แถมล่มในส่วนของ DNS ที่เป็นตัวคอย switch ระหว่าง AZ เพื่อทำ HA ระหว่าง AZ/region อีก กลายเป็นว่าจุดตายที่ทำให้เราหาทางหนีไม่ออก หรือแม้แต่ทำ multi-Region แต่ถ้า main site อยู่ใน region ที่ล่ม ก็อาจจะไม่ช่วย เพราะตัว DNS ที่คอยบริหารจัดการการบอกว่าจะต้องวิ่งไปที่ไหนมันมีปัญหา
