Ubuntu Tweak เป็นโปรแกรมปรับแต่งระบบปฏิบัติการ Ubuntu ยอดนิยม นับแค่ยอดดาวน์โหลดรวมทุกเวอร์ชันใน Launchpad ก็สูงถึงกว่า 3 ล้านครั้งแล้ว ไม่นับจำนวนผู้ใช้ที่ติดตั้งผ่านแหล่งอื่นๆ

แต่เมื่อวันที่ 19 ตุลาคม 2012 ที่ผ่านมา Tualatrix Chou ผู้พัฒนา Ubuntu Tweak ได้ประกาศอย่างเป็นทางการลงในบล็อกส่วนตัวว่า นับจากนี้ไปเขาจะหยุดพัฒนา Ubuntu Tweak แล้ว และดังนั้น Ubuntu Tweak ในส่วนที่เป็น web app ก็จะหยุดให้บริการลงด้วย

Tualatrix Chou ไม่ได้อธิบายเหตุผลเบื้องหลังการตัดสินใจครั้งนี้ เขาเพียงแต่บอกสั้นๆ ว่า

If making free software is not free any more, why still doing this?

อย่างไรก็ตาม ผู้ใช้ Ubuntu หลายคนก็ตั้งข้อสงสัยว่าเรื่องนี้น่าจะมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับนโยบายพ่วงโฆษณาของ Canonical ขณะที่บางคนก็คิดว่าน่าจะมาจากสาเหตุอื่นมากกว่า

อืม .. เสียดายเหมือนกัน แต่สำหรับผมแล้ว GNOME เวอร์ชั่นใหม่มันซับซ้อนเกินไป เกินกว่าที่จะต้มยำง่าย ๆ เหมือนเวอร์ชั่นเดิม ๆ ใช้อุปกรณ์ Tweak แล้วไม่ค่อยรุ่ง ส่วน Tweak อื่น ๆ ทำมือเอาก็ได้ อาจจะไม่ง่ายนักแต่ก็ไม่ยากหรอกถ้าคิดจะใช้

Ubuntu Tweak กลับมาพัฒนาต่อแล้วนะครับ อ่านได้ที่บล็อกของ Ubuntu Tweak เองเลย คำว่า "free" ที่ Tualatrix Chou กล่าว หมายถึง "ความอิสระเสรี" จริงๆ ไม่ได้กล่าวกระทบการหาเงินจาก Ubuntu แบบเนียนๆ ของทาง Canonical เลย หากแต่เป็นการสื่อจากภาษาจีนที่เขาใช้แล้วแปลเป็นภาษาอังกฤษได้ผิดพลาดไป ซึ่งสามารถอ่านข้อความภาษาจีนได้ที่บล็อกจีนของเขาเลย คืองานนี้มันยุ่งยากมากขึ้นจนเหมือนไปเบียดบังเวลาของเขาจนทำให้รู้สึกกดดัน การที่เขาได้หยิบงานนี้มาทำต่อ ไม่เกี่ยวกับแรงกดดันของ Canonical หรือ Ubuntu แต่อย่างใด
