หลังจากไมโครซอฟท์ประกาศเข้าซื้อกิจการ Skype อย่างเป็นทางการ ในมูลค่าสูงชนิดที่นักวิเคราะห์การเงินรุมอัดว่า "ซื้อแพงเกินไป" แต่ในอีกมุมหนึ่งหลายคนก็ตั้งคำถามว่าทำไมไมโครซอฟท์ต้องซื้อ Skype ด้วย

แหล่งข่าววงในเปิดเผยกับ Business Insider ว่า ถึงแม้ไมโครซอฟท์จะเข้าสู่ธุรกิจการติดต่อสื่อสารแบบเรียลไทม์แล้ว (ตั้งแต่การเปิดตัว Live Communications Server ในปีพ.ศ.2545 หรือการทำผลิตภัณฑ์ด้าน IM อย่าง Windows Live Messenger สำหรับผู้ใช้ตามบ้าน) แต่นั้นไมโครซอฟท์ก็ยังไม่สามารถทำได้เทียบกับที่ Skype ได้ทำ นั่นคือการเชื่อมต่อการสื่อสารทางเสียงจากโลกอินเทอร์เน็ตสู่ระบบโทรศัพท์ธรรมดา ทั้งนี้จึงเป็นเหตุผลให้ไมโครซอฟท์ตัดสินใจซื้อ Skype เพื่อก้าวเข้าสู่ธุรกิจ IP communications นั่นเอง (เหมือนกับที่ไมโครซอฟท์เคยซื้อบริษัท aQuantive ด้วยมูลค่าสูงถึง 6 พันล้านดอลลาร์เพื่อให้ไมโครซอฟท์เข้าสู่ธุรกิจการโฆษณาออนไลน์)

นอกจากเหตุผลหลักนี้แล้ว ไมโครซอฟท์ยังมีเหตุผลอีกสามประการที่เป็นปัจจัยในการตัดสินใจซื้อ Skype ดังนี้

ฐานลูกค้า ไมโครซอฟท์ต้องการขายผลิตภัณฑ์และบริการอื่นผ่านฐานลูกค้าของ Skype ที่มีราว 660 ล้านบัญชีผู้ใช้ (ในจำนวนนี้รวมผู้ที่ใช้งาน Skype เป็นประจำสูงถึง 120 ล้านบัญชีผู้ใช้)
บริการวีดีโอแชตแบบ peer-to-peer ที่ Skype สร้างนั้นมีประสิทธิภาพมากกว่าและสามารถใช้งานได้ง่ายกว่า Lync (หรือชื่อเดิมคือ Live Communications Server) ที่ไมโครซอฟท์มีอยู่
ข่าวลือที่บริษัทอื่นก็สนใจที่จะซื้อ Skype เช่นกัน ทำให้ไมโครซอฟท์
พยายามเจรจากับ Skype ด้วยมูลค่าสูงถึง 7 พันล้านดอลลาร์ ตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายนที่ผ่านมา

แหล่งข่าวยังระบุด้วยว่า ไมโครซอฟท์จะไม่พัฒนา Skype
เพื่อ Windows Phone ของตนโดยเฉพาะ หรือกระทั่งไม่ตัดตัวกลางที่เป็นผู้ให้บริการทั้งหลายด้วยการลงไปเป็นผู้ให้บริการ VoIP เสียเอง
