Netflix เริ่มรองรับวิดีโอแบบ HDR10+, เตรียมขยายหนัง HDR ทุกเรื่องเป็น HDR10+ ภายใน 2025

Netflix ประกาศเริ่มรองรับการสตรีมวิดีโอในฟอร์แมต HDR10+ (ของเดิมรองรับ HDR10 ธรรมดา) ในอุปกรณ์ที่รองรับ โดยต้องเป็นการสตรีมในฟอร์แมตวิดีโอแบบ AV1 เท่านั้น

โลกวิดีโอยุคปัจจุบันมีฟอร์แมต HDR ทั้งหมด 3 แบบคือ HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision โดย HDR10 ตัวธรรมดาใช้ metadata แบบ static ไฟล์เดียวสำหรับหน้าจอทุกแบบ ไม่ยืดหยุ่นเท่ากับ HDR10+ และ Dolby Vision ที่ใช้ dynamic metadata ปรับเปลี่ยนตามเฟรมและซีน จึงให้คุณภาพของภาพที่เหนือกว่า

HDR10+ ถูกผลักดันโดย Samsung, Panasonic, 20th Century Fox และ Amazon Prime Video ถึงแม้มาทีหลัง Dolby Vision แต่ได้รับความนิยมสูงกว่า เพราะไม่ต้องจ่ายค่า royalty fee ให้กับ Dolby

ในเบื้องต้น การสตรีมวิดีโอแบบ HDR10+ จะรองรับเฉพาะแพ็กเกจ Premium, อุปกรณ์รับชมต้องรองรับ AV1 & HDR10+ และยังรองรับหนังแค่บางเรื่องเท่านั้น แต่ภายในสิ้นปี 2025 จะขยับขยายให้หนัง HDR ทุกเรื่องปรับมาเป็นฟอร์แมต HDR10+ ด้วย

บริการสตรีมมิ่งชื่อดังหลายตัวอย่าง Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV+, Paramount+ ต่างรองรับ HDR10+ อยู่ก่อนแล้ว จึงไม่น่าแปลกใจที่ Netflix ต้องทำตาม

Netflix ให้สถิติว่าตอนนี้ การสตรีมด้วยฟอร์แมต AV1-SDR ได้รับความนิยมเป็นอันดับสองตลอดกาลแล้ว รองจาก H.264/AVC ที่อยู่มานาน 20 ปีเท่านั้น หลังจากนี้ Netflix จะเริ่มสตรีม AV1 แบบ HDR10+ ซึ่งจะช่วยดันให้ AV1 กลายเป็น codec ยอดนิยมสูงสุดตลอดกาลในไม่ช้า

จริงๆ VP9 ก็รองรับ HDR10+ เพราะ YouTube ก็ทำอยู่
ผมยังเสียดาย VP9 เป็น codec ที่ดีตัวนึงเลย trade off ระหว่าง quality กับ encoding time ก็ใช้ได้ แถมยัง support หลากหลาย แต่ก็เข้าใจแหละว่า AV1 พัฒนาเพื่อรองรับอนาคต แต่เป็นอนาคตที่อาจจะอยู่ไกลกว่าที่คิดนิดนึง
