สำหรับผู้ใช้ตามบ้าน อินเทอร์เน็ตความเร็วสูงเกิดขึ้นครั้งแรกๆ จากเทคโนโลยี ADSL จากเดิมที่เคยต้องติดอยู่กับความเร็ว 56kbps บนสายโทรศัพท์ วันนี้ Joseph W. Lechleider ผู้คิดค้นการเพิ่มแบนด์วิดธ์สายทองแดงด้วยการส่งจ่ายพลังงานสองข้างไม่เท่ากัน ทำให้แบนด์วิดธ์ไม่เท่ากันไปด้วย

เขาคิดเทคโนโลยีนี้ไว้ตั้งแต่ทำงานในทีม Bellcore ที่ Bell Communication Research แนวทางของ Lechleider ทำให้การใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ตความเร็วสูงบนสายโทรศัพท์เป็นจริงขึ้นมาได้

Lechleider ได้รับเลือกเป็นหนึ่งในนักประดิษฐ์แห่งชาติของสหรัฐฯ มาตั้งแต่ปี 2013 เขาเสียชีวิตจากมะเร็งหลอดอาหารด้วยวัย 82 ปี

แม้ยุคสมัยจะก้าวเข้าสู่ยุคไร้สาย

แต่หากไม่มีสิ่งประดิษฐ์ของท่าน เราก็คงไม่รู้จักคำว่าอินเตอร์เน็ตความเร็วสูง
