ซัน ไมโครซิสเต็มส์ กำลังปรับปรุงเว็บไซต์ NETWORK.COM เพื่อให้บริการการประมวลผลแบบกลุ่มเมฆ โดยก่อนหน้านี้ ซันเคยใช้เว็บไซต์ดังกล่าวเป็นหน้าหลักของบริการที่ซันเรียกว่า Sun Grid Compute Utility อันเป็นรูปแบบการประมวลผลแบบสาธารณูปโภค (Utility Computing) โดยคิดราคาค่าเช่าการประมวลผลที่ 1 ดอลล่าร์สหรัฐต่อหนึ่งชั่วโมงซีพียู *

จากแหล่งข่าวกล่าวว่า โครงการวิจัยของซันอย่าง Caroline และ Hydrazine ** จะมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องต่อการพัฒนา NETWORK.COM โฉมใหม่ นอกจากนี้แล้ว ในหน้าเว็บไซต์ NETWORK.COM ซันยังขอความร่วมมือจากลูกค้าให้ช่วยบอกความต้องการมาที่ซันว่า อยากพบบริการอะไรบ้างบน NETWORK.COM

* ชั่วโมงซีพียู (CPU hour) เป็นหน่วยวัดชนิดหนึ่งที่ถูกนำไปใช้ในการคิดค่่าบริการเช่าซีพียูหรือเช่าการประมวลผล คำนวณจากช่วงเวลาตั้งแต่เปิดโปรแกรมขึ้นมาประมวลผล คูณกับจำนวนซีพียูที่ใช้ในการประมวลผล

** โครงการ Caroline คล้ายกับบริการ Google App Engine ส่วน Hydrazine เทียบเคียงได้กับ Microsoft Live Mesh

ผมขอแนะนำ Caroline กับ Hydrazine พอคร่าวๆในนี้นะครับ

จากการที่เคยได้ถามคนวงในของซัน เขาบอกว่า Caroline และ Hydrazine เป็น Cloud Computing Platform ที่ซันกำลังทำอยู่ โดยทั้งสองตัวถือว่าให้บริการลักษณะ Platform-as-a-Servic (PaaS) หรือการที่ผู้ให้บริการจัดเตรียมแพลตฟอร์มหรือสภาพแวดล้อมสำหรับการพัฒนา/ประมวลผล/โฮสต์โปรแกรม

Caroline เทียบได้กับ Google App Engine โดยทางการค้า เรามักเรียกโปรแกรมที่โฮสต์บน PaaS และให้บริการแบบออนไลน์บนอินเทอร์เน็ตว่า Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) โดย Caroline สนับสนุนภาษา Java, Python, Ruby และ Perl

ส่วน Hydrazine นี้คล้ายๆกับ Microsoft Live Mesh อันเป็นแพลตฟอร์มสำหรับประสานหรือโอนข้อมูลระหว่างคอมพิวเตอร์/โทรศัพท์มือถือ/พีดีเอ ผ่านเครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ต และเราเรียกบริการแบบนี้ว่า Software+Services (ตรงข้ามกับ SaaS) ซึ่ง Hydrazine จับเอา JavaFX มาเป็นตัวชูโรงสำหรับสร้าง client เพื่อโยง client กับ cloud ของซันนี่เองครับ

ตามความคิดเห็นของผม ผมว่าแผนต่างๆเหล่านี้ ก็คล้ายๆกลยุทธ์ของ Google นั่นคือ Client Cloud Connectivity (C3) ตามที่ mk เคยเสนอข่าวไว้ก่อนหน้านี้ มี Client + Connectivity (อย่าง JavaFX + Hydrazine) และก็มี Cloud (อย่าง Network.com และ Caroline)
