ไอบีเอ็มควักกระเป๋าลงทุน 10 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐฯ ในบริษัทซอฟต์แวร์ฐานข้อมูลโอเพนซอร์ส EnterpriseDB ที่พัฒนาซอฟต์แวร์จาก PostgreSQL เพื่อเพิ่มความเข้ากันได้กับเบอร์หนึ่งอย่าง Oracle เพื่อสนับสนุนให้ลูกค้าของ Oracle ย้ายมาใช้ซอฟต์แวร์ของ EnterpriseDB ได้ง่ายขึ้น

ไอบีเอ็มเองนั้นเป็นเจ้าของซอฟต์แวร์ฐานข้อมูล DB2 อยู่เช่นกัน

ในแง่ของสินค้า บริษัท EnterpriseDB นั้นวางซอฟต์แวร์ของตนไว้ตรงกลางระหว่างซอฟต์แวร์โอเพนซอร์สและซอฟต์แวร์ระดับองค์กร โดยนอกจากจะต้องแข่งขันกับ Oracle แล้วอีกด้านหนึ่ง EnterpriseDB ก็ต้องแข่งขันกับ MySQL ด้วยการออกซอฟต์แวร์ช่วยในการย้ายฐานข้อมูล

แต่ล่าสุดพันธมิตรรายใหญ่ที่สุดของ EnterpriseDB คือ Sun นั้นก็ไปซื้อ MySQL เข้ามาและให้ Marten Mickos อดีตประฐานกรรมการของ MySQL เข้ามาดูแลกิจการด้านฐานข้อมูลทั้งหมดของ Sun

ไม่รู้ว่าผมเข้าใจผิดหรือเปล่า

แต่ใน Internet News บอกว่า EnterpriseDB เนี่ยเป็นบริษัทที่รับซัพพอร์ต PostgreSQL ไม่ได้พัฒนาซอฟต์แวร์ฐานข้อมูลใหม่

PostgreSQL เนี่ยเป็นคู่แข่งกับทั้ง MySQL และ Oracle เจ้า Oracle นี่ยักษ์ใหญ่ยืนเองได้ ส่วนเจ้า MySQL เนี่ยก็มีซันรับทำซัพพอร์ต ซันยังรับซัพพอร์ตทั้ง PostgreSQL และ MySQL แต่พอคุณ Mickos ที่เป็นประธานเก่าของ MySQL เข้ามาดูแลแทนทำให้คนอื่นเริ่มไม่แน่ใจในอนาคตการซัพพอร์ตของ PostgreSQL ของซันเอง

การที่ไอบีเอ็มเข้ามาร่วมทุนทำให้มีแรงเงินมาลงที่บริการซัพพอร์ต PostgreSQL มากขึ้น ทำให้สนามแข่งขันนี้น่าสนใจยิ่งขึ้น

ที่บอกว่าเพิ่มความเข้ากันได้กับ Oracle นั้นเข้าใจว่าบริการของ EnterpriseDB ที่มีชื่อว่า Postgres Plus Advanced Server เนี่ยจะเพิ่มซอฟต์แวร์ที่ทำให้ PostgreSQL ติดต่อกับฐานข้อมูล Oracle ได้ดีขึ้น คิดว่าไม่เกี่ยวกับการย้ายฐานข้อมูลแต่อย่างใดครับ

ลองอ่าน feature ของ EnterpriseDB ข้อ 1 และ 2 จะรู้คำตอบแล้วครับ(ว่าเป็นคู่แข่งที่ต้องการเทียบชั้นกับ Oracle)

ไม่ใช่การพัฒนาซอฟต์แวร์ใหม่ ทั้งหมด ครับ แต่ EnterpriseDB ก็มีความต่างจาก PostgreSQL อย่างมีนัยสำคัญมาก

เรื่องที่สำคัญที่สุดคือ EnterpriseDB นั้นรองรับ PL/SQL ของออราเคิล ทำให้เราสามารถนำแอพลิเคชั่นที่พัฒนาบนออราเคิลมารันได้ทันที ไม่ใช่แค่การย้ายฐานข้อมูลแต่อย่างใด
