โครงการ Ubuntu เตรียมเปลี่ยนฟอนต์มาตรฐานของระบบ จากเดิมใช้ฟอนต์ตระกูล DejaVu เปลี่ยนมาเป็นฟอนต์ตระกูล Noto ของกูเกิล

ฟอนต์ทั้งสองตัวเกิดมาด้วยแนวคิดเดียวกัน คือเป็นฟอนต์โอเพนซอร์สที่ใช้ได้อย่างเสรี และรองรับภาษาต่างๆ ให้มากที่สุดเท่าที่เป็นไปได้ ฟอนต์ DejaVu ออกครั้งแรกในปี 2004 โดยนำฟอนต์ภาษาละติน Bitstream Vera ของบริษัทฟอนต์ Bitstream มาขยายผลต่อโดยเติมอักขระในภาษาอื่นๆ เพิ่มเข้ามา

เหตุผลของ Ubuntu คือฟอนต์ Noto ในช่วงหลังรองรับภาษาต่างๆ เยอะขึ้นมาก (รวมถึงภาษาไทย ซึ่ง DejaVu ไม่มี) และคุณภาพของฟอนต์ในบางภาษาก็ดีกว่าของที่ DejaVu มี แถมฟอนต์ Noto ยังยืดหยุ่นกว่าเพราะแยกฟอนต์เป็นเฉพาะภาษาด้วย โหลดไฟล์มาเท่าที่ใช้งาน ในขณะที่ DejaVu เป็นฟอนต์ใหญ่ตัวเดียวเลย

ลินุกซ์ดิสโทรทั้ง Fedora และ Debian (หากลง GNOME Desktop) ก็เปลี่ยนมาใช้ Noto กันไปก่อนแล้ว การเปลี่ยนแปลงของ Ubuntu ย่อมไม่มีผลแตกต่างกันมากนัก

Ubuntu จะยังใช้ฟอนต์ DejaVu Sans Mono สำหรับฟอนต์แบบ monospace ต่อไป และใช้ฟอนต์ Ubuntu เป็นฟอนต์สำหรับแสดงข้อความใน UI ต่อไปเช่นเดิม หากแผนการเดินหน้าจะมีผลใน Ubuntu เวอร์ชันหน้า 23.10

OS มันต้อง provide generic font family ให้ application ครับ
อย่างเวลา
เราใส่ serif, sans-serif, monospace, ... OS มันจะไปเลือก default font ใน family ให้
ในกรณีนี้ ถ้า app request sans-serif OS มันจะไปเอา Noto มาให้
