ทีมพัฒนาเคอร์เนลของ Ubuntu ประกาศนโยบายการเลือกเคอร์เนลใหม่สำหรับ Ubuntu แต่ละรุ่น เปลี่ยนมาใช้แนวทางใหม่คือเลือกเคอร์เนลเวอร์ชันใหม่ที่สุดเสมอ แม้ยังไม่ออกรุ่นเสถียร (ยังเป็น Release Candidate หรือ RC) อยู่ก็ตาม

โครงการ Ubuntu มีระยะเวลาการออกรุ่นที่ตายตัวทุก 6 เดือน ในขณะที่เคอร์เนลลินุกซ์มีธรรมเนียมออกใหม่ทุก 2-3 เดือนแต่เวลาไม่ตายตัว เมื่อบวกกับทีมเคอร์เนลของ Ubuntu ต้องการเวลาราว 1 เดือนในการนำเคอร์เนลต้นน้ำ มาปรับแต่งเพื่อใช้งานใน Ubuntu ทำให้หลายครั้ง ทีมเคอร์เนลเจอปัญหาว่าระยะเวลาออกเคอร์เนลรุ่นใหม่ มาชนกับการออกดิสโทร Ubuntu รุ่นใหม่พอดี (ดูตัวอย่างตามภาพ ที่ Ubuntu 24.10 มาออกชนกับเคอร์เนล 6.11)

ก่อนหน้านี้ Ubuntu ใช้นโยบายเลือกเคอร์เนลรุ่นก่อนหน้าที่เข้าสถานะเสถียรไปแล้ว เพื่อให้มีเวลาปรับแต่งทัน (ในกรณีข้างต้นคือเลือกเคอร์เนล 6.10) วิธีการนี้มีข้อเสียคือ Ubuntu เวอร์ชันนั้นจะได้เคอร์เนลที่เก่าเกินไป อาจไม่รองรับฮาร์ดแวร์รุ่นใหม่ๆ ในช่วงเวลานั้น

นโยบายใหม่ Ubuntu จะเลือกใช้เคอร์เนลตัวใหม่ล่าสุดที่โครงการลินุกซ์กำลังพัฒนาอยู่ ในวันที่ Ubuntu เข้าสถานะ freeze คือไม่รับโค้ดใหม่จากต้นน้ำแล้ว แม้ว่าเคอร์เนลเวอร์ชันนั้นยังเป็น RC อยู่ก็ตาม ข้อดีคือได้เคอร์เนลเวอร์ชันใหม่ล่าสุด ณ ช่วงเวลานั้นเลย ข้อเสียคือเคอร์เนลอาจไม่เสถียรมากพอ ซึ่งทีมเคอร์เนลของ Ubuntu จะแก้ปัญหานี้โดยการออกเคอร์เนลเวอร์ชันอัพเกรดให้ในภายหลังแทน (ถ้าเป็นช่วงที่ออกดิสโทร LTS ก็จะออกดิสโทรเวอร์ชัน .1 ที่มีเคอร์เนลเสถียรตามมาให้)

มันไม่เกี่ยวกับ Linux แต่เกี่ยวกับเจ้าของดิสโทรว่าจะออกของใหม่ตอนไหน จะลากยาวข้ามทศวรรษแบบไม่ขึ้น Major Version ยังได้เลย แบบ RHEL แต่จ่ายหนักหน่อยนะ

พวก Rolling Release ที่บอกว่าออกทุกเดือน จริง ๆ สามารถออกถี่กว่านั้นได้อีกเพราะมันไม่ได้มีเวอร์ชันจริง ๆ อยู่ แต่มันขึ้นของใหม่ตามที่เจ้าของดิสโทรเห็นชอบ อย่าง Arch นี่เลขเวอร์ชันแพ็กเกจวิ่งสนุกสนานเลย ขณะที่ Manjaro ล็อกการปล่อยแพ็กเกจไว้เป็นจุด ๆ ซึ่งก็มีข้อเสียคือบางแพ็กเกจมันล้าสมัยเร็วมาก (เช่น discord) ก็จะใช้พวกระบบแพ็กเกจรอง เช่น Flatpak, Snap หรือว่าดาวน์โหลดแพ็กเกจแบบมัดรวม Dependency มาใช้งานแทน และ AUR กับ Manjaro ไม่ต้องพูดถึง เพราะว่า Arch มันวิ่งไปก่อนเยอะมาก แพ็กเกจพังข้ามกันได้บ่อย
