นาซ่าประกาศให้งานออกแบบและพัฒนาระบบนำส่งมนุษย์ลงไปยังพื้นผิวดวงจันทร์ (human landing systems - HLS) โครงการย่อยภายใต้โครงการนำมนุษย์ไปยังดวงจันทร์อีกครั้งในปี 2024 ของนาซ่าที่ชื่อว่า Artemis

รอบนี้นาซ่าประกาศมอบงานให้ 3 ทีม ได้แก่

Integrated Lander Vehicle (ILV): ยานแบบสามชั้น (3-stage) โดยบริษัท Blue Origin เป็นยานที่จะยิงสู่อวกาศด้วย New Glenn Rocket System และ ULA Vulcan
Dynetics Human Landing System (DHLS): โดยบริษัท Dynetics เป็นยานชิ้นเดียวและยิงขึ้นสู่อวกาศด้วย ULA Vulcan
Starship: ยานลงจอดที่ยิงขึ้นสู่อวกาศด้วย SpaceX Super Heavy

ทางนาซ่าไม่ระบุว่าโครงการใดได้รับเงินเท่าใดบ้าง แต่รวมแล้วทั้งสามโครงการจะได้รับเงิน 967 ล้านดอลลาร์ หรือประมาณสามหมื่นล้านบาท ทั้งสามมีเวลาสร้างระบบสาธิตให้นาซ่า 10 เดือนเท่ากัน โดยต้องสาธิตในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2021

เท่าที่ทราบจุดประสงค์ก็เพื่อทำฐานปล่อยไปดาวอังคารครับ ชั้นบรรยากาศของโลกเป็นภาระในการใช้พลังงานในการออกจากโลกมหาศาล ทำให้จรวดมีขนาดใหญ่ อุปกรณ์ซับซ้อน ดูแลยาก แต่ถ้าฐานปล่อยไปดาวอังคารอยู่ที่ดวงจันทร์ก็จะสามารถออกแบบให้จรวดมีขนาดเล็ก และมีความซับซ้อนน้อยกว่า ซึ่งเรื่องเหล่านี้มีผลต่อการดูแลรักษา รวมถึงการใช้ชีวิตบนดาวอังคาร อีกประการเป็นเรื่องวิถีโคจร บนดวงจันทร์ไม่มีกรรมสิทธิ์ของประเทศใด สามารถหาตำแหน่งที่ดีที่สุด ที่ใช้พลังงานน้อยที่สุดในการปล่อยยานเข้าสู่วงโคจรไปดาวอังคารได้ดีกว่าบนโลก

แต่ถ้าเป็นทฤษฏีสมคบคิด ก็คงต้องบอกว่าด้านมืดดวงจันทร์เป็นฐานของมนุษย์ต่างดาว คงไปให้มนุษย์ต่างดาวช่วยส่งยานไปดาวอื่น 555
