นักวิจัยจากสหรัฐ ได้ทำการสร้างคอมพิวเตอร์ที่มีชีวิตขึ้นมาเป็นครั้งแรก โดยการปรับเปลี่ยนกลไกพันธุกรรมของแบคทีเรียชนิดหนึ่ง งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ ยังเป็นการเปิดประตู ไปสู่การประยุกต์ใช้งานต่างๆ มากมาย เช่น การเก็บข้อมูล หรือเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการปรับแต่งยีน

ทีมนักวิจัย โดยความร่วมมือของ ภาควิชาชีววิทยาและภาควิชาคณิตศาสตร์ ของ Davidson College, North Carolina และ Missouri Western State ได้ทำการเพิ่มยีนให้กับแบคทีเรีย Escherichia ทำให้คอมพิวเตอร์ที่ได้จากแบคทีเรียชนิดนี้ สามารถแก้ปริศนาคลาสสิกของคณิตศาสตร์ ที่มีชื่อว่า burnt pancake ได้

ปัญหา burnt pancake จะเป็นกลุ่มของแพนเค้กขนาดต่างๆ วางซ้อนกันอยู่ โดยจะมีด้านที่สุกและด้านที่ไหม้อยู่ เป้าหมายของปัญหาดังกล่าว คือ จัดเรียงให้แพนเค้กชิ้นที่ใหญ่สุดอยู่ด้านล่าง โดยด้านที่ไหม้ต้องคว่ำอยู่ โดยพลิกแพนเค้กให้น้อยที่สุด

ข้อดีของคอมพิวเตอร์ที่สร้างจากแบคทีเรีย ที่เหนือกว่าคอมพิวเตอร์แบบเดิมๆ ก็คือ ในหลอดการทดลอง 1 หลอด สามารถบรรจุแบคทีเรียที่ได้รับการตัดต่อพันธุกรรมได้หลายล้านตัว ซึ่งแต่ละตัวสามารถทำงานร่วมกันแบบขนานได้ นอกจากนี้ยังประหยัดเนื้อที่และมีราคาที่ต่ำ

อธิบายง่ายๆ คือยีนเป็นเหมือน String เส้นหนึ่ง แล้วเขามีเอนไซม์ที่สามารถตัด substring ออกมาแล้วกลับด้าน substring นั้นแล้วต่อเข้าไปที่จุดเดิมได้ เช่น ABCDE ผมตัดที่ B กับ D (รวมทั้งสองตัวด้วย ดังนั้นชิ้นที่ตัดออกมาเป็น BCD) แล้วแปะเข้าไปให้เป็น ADCBE

การตัดและกลับข้างนี้โมเดลปัญหา BPP แบบมีสองแพนเค๊ก โดยใช้ยีน pLac เป็นแพนเค๊กก้อนแรก แทนด้วยหมายเลข 1 และ RBS-tetA(C) เป็นแพนเค๊กก้อนที่สอง แทนด้วยหมายเลข 2 เนื่องจากคุณสมบัติของยีนสองตัวนี้ เมื่อเรียงลำดับกันแบบ (1, 2) หรือ (-2, -1) จะเปิดยีนที่ต้านยาปฏิชีวนะ แต่ถ้าเป็นแบบอื่นยีนที่ต้านยาปฏิชีวนะจะไม่ทำงาน ถ้าเราใส่แบคทีเรียลงในยาปฏิชีวนะ ก็จะมีแต่พวกที่มีลำดับ (1, 2) หรือ (-2, -1) เท่านั้นที่อยู่รอด

ทีนี้เค้าก็ฝัง (-2, 1) ลงในแบคทีเรีย แล้วปล่อยให้มันขยายพันธุ์เรื่อยๆ ปกติเวลาแบคทีเรียแบ่งเซลล์นั้น จะมีการตัดและกลับยีนตามที่ได้กล่าวมา เมื่อมันแบ่งเซลล์ไปเรื่อยๆ ก็มีโอกาสที่บางเซลล์ได้ยีนที่ต้านยาปฏิชีวนะ

เมื่อเวลาผ่านไป เขาก็เอาแบคทีเรียไปปล่อยในยาปฏิชีวนะ อันนี้ทำให้มีแต่พวกที่มียีนสองแบบที่กล่าวมานั้นอยู่รอดได้

ข้อสังเกต: การตัดต่อยีนนี้ไม่ได้แก้ BPP อย่างแท้จริง เพราะการออกแบบยีนให้ต้านยาปฏิชีวนะนั้น เขารู้ลำดับของยีนที่ถูกต้องก่อน ปกติถ้าเราต้องการเรียงลำดับอะไรซักอย่าง เราก็ไม่ควรรู้คำตอบนั้นอยู่ก่อนเรียงไม่ใช่เหรอ?

อย่างไรก็ตาม สิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือเอนไซม์ที่ทำการกลับยีนอันนี้น่าจะสามารถเอามาใช้ประโยชน์ในการแก้ปัญหาพวก combinatorial problem ได้ อย่างไรก็ตามยีนที่ทำหน้าที่ตัด กลับ และต่อยีนอื่นนั้นได้รับการศึกษามาก่อนหน้านี้บ้างแล้ว (เช่น transposase) งานนี้จึงไม่ได้มีอะไรใหม่มากนักนอกจากการเอาความรู้ชีวโมเลกุลมาต่อกับคอมฯ
