Google ชวนทุกคนปิดไฟเป็นเวลาหนึ่งชั่วโมง

Google ได้ทำการเปลี่ยนสีของหน้าเว็บเพจ Google เป็นสีดำ เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงโครงการประหยัดพลังงานซึ่งจะมีขึ้นทั่วโลก
ซึ่งมีชื่อโครงการว่า "Earth Hour"

โดย Google ได้มีแผนเชิญชวนให้ทุกคนทั่วโลกร่วมปิดไฟเป็นเวลาหนึ่งชั่วโมงในวันที่ 29 มีนาคม 2551 ตั้งแต่เวลา 20.00-21.00 น.
หากใครที่เข้า Google ก็จะพบว่า Google ได้เปลี่ยนเว็บเพจเป็นสีดำ และใช้ถ้อยคำเชิญชวนว่า "เราปิดไฟแล้ว คราวนี้ถึงทีคุณบ้าง"

และทาง Google ก็ได้มาชี้แจงรายละเอียดถึงเหตุผลว่าเพราะเหตุใด Google จึงจะไม่เปลี่ยนเว็บเพจเป็นสีดำตลอดไป

เหตุผลที่ไม่เปลี่ยนเป็นสีดำตลอดไป เพราะไม่ได้ประโยชน์อะไรครับ
จากการทดลอง สรุปได้ว่าถ้าเปลี่ยนเป็นสีดำจะลดปริมาณการใช้พลังงานได้เฉลี่ยเพียง 10.8 วัตต์ต่อชั่วโมงสำหรับจอ CRT และกลับใช้พลังงานมากขึ้น 0.1 วัตต์ต่อชั่วโมงสำหรับจอ LCD (ซึ่งคิดเป็นจำนวน 75% ของประเภทของจอภาพที่ใช้กันในปัจจุบัน)

ผลสรุปมาจากการทดสอบด้วยจอ LCD 23 จอ และ CRT 4 จอ
