Seagate เตรียมปล่อยฮาร์ดดิสก์ 3 TB สำหรับระบบปฏิบัติการ 64 บิตเท่านั้น

พื้นที่ฮาร์ดดิสก์ในปัจจุบันนั้นนับวันจะเต็มเร็วขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จนดูเหมือนฮาร์ดดิสก์ขนาด 2 TB ที่จำหน่ายกันอยู่นั้นเริ่มจะไม่เพียงพอ ทาง Seagate นั้นก็เตรียมที่จะออกฮาร์ดดิสก์ตัวใหม่ขนาด 3 TB ให้ใช้กันแล้วครับ

แต่เนื่องจากข้อจำกัดของระบบปฏิบัติการในปัจจุบันนั้นใช้ระบบอ้างอิงพื้นที่แบบ LBA (Logical Block Addressing) แบบเก่าที่ใช้มาตั้งแต่สมัย DOS รุ่งเรื่องที่อ้างอิงข้อมูลด้วยบล็อกขนาด 512 บิต ทำให้การอ้างอิงนั้นทำได้จำกัดเพียง 2.1 TB เท่านั้น โดยหากต้องการใช้พื้นที่ที่มากกว่านี้นั้นจำเป็นจะต้องใช้แบบ Long LBA ซึ่ง ณ ตอนนี้นั้นมีเพียงระบบปฏิบัติการ Windows 7 64 บิต, Windows Vista 64 บิต และ Linux บางรุ่นเท่านั้นที่สนับสนุน หากนำมาใช้กับระบบเก่าโดยเฉพาะ Windows XP นั้นอาจจะเห็นข้อมูลเพียงแค่ 990 MB (ไม่ถึง GB!) เท่านั้น และนอกจากนี้แล้วไดรว์ความจุสูงเหล่านั้นยังอาจมีปัญหาการบูตกับไบออสเก่าๆ ที่ไม่สนับสนุนอีกด้วย

ต่อไปนี้เราคงจำเป็นจะต้องใช้ 64 บิตกันจริงๆ แล้ว ใช่ไหมครับ ขาโหลดทั้งหลาย :D

เห็นแล้วก็น้ำลายไหลอยากได้แต่ไม่มีเพื่อนอยู่อเมริกา ได้แต่องุ่นเปรี้ยวไปว่า มันไม่ดีหรอก รออีกหน่อย SSD 1.5TB ราคา 4,500 บาทค่อยซื้อก็ได้ คุ้มกว่าอีก (องุ่นเปรี้ยวมากๆ)

by default Snow Leopard จะ boot เป็น 32 bit อยู่ครับ

ซึ่งจริงๆแล้วถ้าเราจะเลือก boot เป็น 64 bit ก็ได้ โดย

Hold down the '6' and '4' keys when the Mac starts up (until the Apple log). After starting up in 64-bit mode, check About This Mac…, click More Info, then click on Software. In 64-bit mode there will be a “yes” next to “64-bit Kernel and Extensions”.

ผมใช้ Windows XP 64bit อยู่นะ
แต่ยังไม่เคยลองใช้้ HDD ใหญ่เกิน 2TB ซะที ไม่รู้ว่าจะมีปัญหาอะไรรึป่าว

ผมใช้ ในเครื่องลูกละ 1.5TB 4ลูก ภายนอกลูกละ 1TB อีก 2 ตัว รวมเป็น 8TB ยังเต็มเลยอ่ะ กำลังวางแผนจะเปลี่ยนเป็น 2TB ทั้งหมด เจอออก 3TB เลยต้องหยุดชั่งใจหน่อยว่า ระบบปฏิบัติการ 64 Bits นี่คงไม่ใช่เรื่องใหญ่ แต่ Bios นี่สิ ผมต้อง ซื้อ Mainboard ใหม่เลยหรือเปล่า หรือ แค่ Flash bios ก็ใช้ได้ แต่ไม่แน่ใจว่าทางผู้ผลิตเมนบอร์ดจะมีเวอร์ชั่นที่ สนับสนุนออกมารองรับหรือยัง หรือต้องรอ Bios เวอร์ชั่นใหม่ก่อน ค่อยหันมาดู HDD ลูกละ 3TB ?

โห ไม่เคยได้ยินเลยเรื่องนี้ น่ากลัวเหมือนกัน

ในชีวิตนี้เคยซื้อฮาร์ดดิสก์แต่ยี่ห้อ Hitachi กับ WD (ซีเรียสมากเรื่องยี่ห้อของฮาร์ดดิสก์ คอมเสียช่างมันขอข้อมูลอยู่ก็พอ) ...ไม่รู้เป็นอะไรกับ Seagate ถึงไม่เคยซื้อใช้ อ่านเจอตรงนี้ก็คงไม่กล้าดูยี่ห้อนี้ไปอีกนาน

ไม่เข้าใจอย่างนึง ทำไม OS 32bit ถึงไม่เห็นว่ามีพื้นที่ 2.1TB (เหมือนแรมที่ใส่เกิน 3GB ก็เห็นสูงสุดแค่นั้น)
แต่กลับเห็นพื้นที่น้อยกว่า 1GB ซะอย่างนั้น พอจะอธิบายทางเทคนิคง่ายๆ ได้มั้ยครับ?

ข้อจำกัดของทั้งสองอย่างใน 32-bit OS คล้ายกันครับแต่แตกต่างกันครงที่:

  • สำหรับหน่วยความจำหลัก [RAM] จะใช้ที่อยู่ขนาด 32 bits (เลขฐานสอง 32 หลัก) สำหรับอ้างถึงแต่ละ byte ของหน่วยความจำ ทำให้อ้างได้มากสุด 2^32 = 4294967296 = 4GB
  • สำหรับ hard disk จะมีการแบ่งเป็น sector เหมือนห้องย่อยๆซึ่งปรกติจะมีขนาด 512 bytes ต่อ sector คราวนี้ที่อยู่ของแต่ละ sectorเราก็จะใช้ 32 bits เหมือนกัน ทำให้อ้างได้มากสุด 4294967296 sectors x 512 bytes/sector = 2TB นั่นเอง

สรุปคือ จำนวน "ข้อมูล" ที่อ้างถึงได้เท่ากันคือประมาณ 4 พันล้านเศษ แต่ใน RAM 1 หน่วย = 1 byte ขณะที่ใน hard disk 1 หน่วย = 512 bytes ทำให้จำนวน bytes ทั้งหมดที่ใช้ได้ไม่เท่ากันนั่นเอง (2TB = 512 x 4GB)
