ธนาคารกลางอินเดียขีดเส้นตาย ตู้เอทีเอ็มต้องเลิกใช้ Windows XP ภายในหนึ่งปี

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) หรือธนาคารกลางอินเดียออกประกาศมาตรการปรับปรุงความมั่นคงปลอดภัยของตู้เอทีเอ็ม หลังตู้จำนวนมากยังคงใช้ Windows XP โดยขีดเส้นตายให้ตู้ทั้งหมดต้องอัพเกรดภายในเดือนมิถุนายน 2019

กำหนดการแบ่งออกเป็น 4 ช่วงตามลำดับ เริ่มจากต้องอัพเกรด 25% ภายในเดือนกันยายนปีนี้ และเพิ่มทีละ 25% ทุกสามเดือนจนต้องครบทั้งหมดในปีหน้า

นอกจากบังคับอัพเกรด Windows XP แล้ว ประกาศนี้ยังระบุให้ธนาคารเพิ่มมาตรการอื่น เช่น ป้องกันการ skimming, ปิดพอร์ต USB, และอัพเดตซอฟต์แวร์อื่นๆ

Windows XP รุ่นเดสก์ทอปนั้นหมดอายุซัพพอร์ตไปตั้งแต่ปี 2014 แม้ไมโครซอฟท์จะขายซัพพอร์ตให้กับองค์กรจำนวนหนึ่งต่อไป ส่วนวินโดวส์ตระกูล XP ตัวสุดท้ายที่ยังซัพพอร์ตอยู่คือ Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 ที่จะซัพพอร์ตถึงเดือนเมษายน 2019

วิธีแก้ที่ใช้ได้ผลมากๆ คือกำหนดโทษให้บริษัทที่ไม่ยอมเปลี่ยนระบบให้ปลอดภัยขึ้น ต้องจ่ายค่าปรับแพงกว่าค่าเปลี่ยนระบบ พอบริษัทเหล่านั้นคิดถึงเรื่องกำไรขาดทุนก็จะรีบเปลี่ยนโดยเร็ว เพราะต้นทุนน้อยกว่าการโดนปรับ

อย่างหลายๆ บริษัทที่ยังใช้ระบบไม่ปลอดภัย ก็เพราะค่าเสียหายจากการถูกโจรกรรมมันถูกมากๆ ต่างกันเป็น 1,000 เท่า เมื่อเทียบกับค่าใช้จ่ายที่ต้องปรับปรุงระบบให้ปลอดภัยขึ้น
