The social media manager will create and maintain new marketing campaigns, brand promotions or product lines for their company on different sites, monitor progress using web analytic tools, and answer directly to social media inquiries, all while using the company's voice and guidelines. A social media manager is continuously generating content for the company, creating new ideas and campaigns, and measuring how effective those ideas are.
WHAT ARE THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS?
You will need a bachelor's degree in marketing, PR, computer science or similar.Depending on the job, your work experience managing other social media campaigns may be considered if you don't have a relevant degree. You will also need demonstrated experience in social and digital media, which includes being able to measure social media presence.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Implements a social media strategy : A social media strategy doesn’t appear out of thin air. It needs to be developed. The social media manager will develop the plan and the parameters for the corporate social media strategy. They will determine objectives, establish what needs to be accomplished and define how it will be done
- Writing: Social media managers will need to know how to write effective copy in a lot of different styles, for websites, twitter, Facebook, etc. Knowledge of writing for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a plus.
- Write/Post blog articles : Writing interesting articles or blog postings (and/or hiring copywriter) on topics relevant to the company or industry. The social media manager will identify and develop blog posts and other materials. They may also recruit and develop other bloggers and blog editors.
- Searches for news/articles to post
Depending on the nature of the organization, the social media manager may be tasked with the duty of constantly scouring the internet and the news headlines for articles, stories and tips that are industry related and which can be posted to the social media accounts. - Research: Social media managers need to know what is happening in the fast changing world of social and digital media, what competitors are doing and what new measurement tools are being use.
- Problem-Solving: Social media managers figure out how to best communicate a company's message on different platforms, and sometimes might need to convey sensitive issues or deal with angry customers.
- Organization: There are many different platforms, and new ones are being developed all the time. How you communicate on each, determining audience, and measuring tactics all take organization.
- Interpersonal Skills: Even through writing, social media managers are a direct connection between a company and the public. Being friendly and approachable online will help.
- Technical Skills: Social media managers work almost exclusively through computers. Understanding computers, SEO, internet access and being tech savvy is necessary.
