Dear all,

I hope you are enjoying the summer break. As this year we have an extra long break, I have decided to organise some informal workshops on Internet and computer technologies. The idea is to give explanations, demonstrations and hands-on experience with technologies that support your freedom. This may include: the Internet, computer security, Linux, and other free, open-source software.

The plan is to hold the first workshop on Friday 20 June 2014, starting 10am. The topic will be Internet Privacy - a summary is at the end of this email. Other potential topics are: WiFi, Advanced Command Line, Deploy A Personal Server, Licenses, Bitcoin, Secure Client Applications. Descriptions and further info are at your favourite website:

Although some topics may include a presentation, the idea is that most of the time is spent demonstrating and using software. Although I will lead the organisation of the workshops, other students will be assisting; I hope for discussions between all participants (rather than just lecturing from me).

The location of next weeks opening workshop will most likely be SIIT Rangsit - I will announce the room and other details before 5pm Wednesday 25 June. Anyone is welcome to attend - feel free to announce to your friends. If you think you will attend next week, reply to this email so I can find an appropriate room.

The day, time, location and topic of the 2nd and subsequent workshops will be discussed on Friday 20th. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Topic: Internet Privacy
Date/Time: Friday 20 June 2014, 10am-12noon

This workshop will explain technologies used for keeping communications across the Internet private. First we will discuss the difference between keeping your data private versus keeping your behaviour private. For example, the former may involve ensuring no-one can see your password sent to a website, while the latter may involve ensuring no-one knows you are visiting a particular website. Then we will explain why with 'normal' Internet usage, your data and behaviour is NOT private. Finally, we will list some different options for achieving Internet privacy (such as proxies, browser plugins, anonymizers, VPNs, and TOR), explain how they work, and compare them in terms of how well they keep your data or behaviour private, cost, trustworthiness, etc.

Assumed background of attendees: Basic knowledge of Internet protocols (e.g. IP addresses, HTTP), computer security concepts (e.g. what is encryption?). Completion of ITS323 Introduction to Data Communications is preferred, but not necessary.

This workshop will consist mainly of discussion and demos. If you bring your own laptop and/or mobile, you may participate in demos such as: using a free web proxy, setting up and using a VPN on your Android/IOS device, using TOR.
