I read your open letter, and generally was agree with you. A little comment about availability is that if you allow weight to be somewhat more than 2 kg then there are plenty of choices I believe.
But please put that aside for the moment, and focus to your last paragraph. The right thing would be to declare the goods upon arrival and pay duty. Of course you may choose to just walk pass the green channel, like most people do, though that's a bit like smuggling.

Today after spending hours I did find some options, but didnt buy as almost all shops had closed i couldnt compare prices. Will definately buy one tomorrow.
Its from Lenovo 2.1 Ghz, 4MB cache 800 Mhz FSB weighing 2 kg costing abt 35k (at IT city might be cheaper at smaller shops).
Maybe if i buy another brand/model, I can get the same specs with vista license at lower price. So isint it a move to discourage FOSS?
Hmm... noted your point abt the duty thingy. Will need to check with someone if it is ok for non-Thai citizens to do or not. I don't think a foreigner living in Thailand would need to pay duty on a laptop brought into the country while 'travelling'.

I'm using Lenovo R61 without Windows license but it weighted 2.4kg. I think you already take a look at T61 which always come with Vista business.
It's look like there's no "without windows" option in mid-high notebook market in thailand. You have to take a look at cheaper (and heavier) one.
I think the problem in Thai market is more than just "with or without windows". It's about customization. In my case, I need a cheapest laptop with virtualization capability and I can't find anyone too. Most of laptop with this feature just come along with many things I don't use and don't want to pay for like better speakers, larger hdd, or better design. I just can't go to the shop and say "Can I upgrade this latop to T7100?" and get what I wanted.
Dell is quite good at customization, too bad that Ubuntu option isn't available in SE Asia.

I got lost at dell thailand website it kept asking me to login with no way to register. I sent them an email with requirements on wednesday. seems they are not interested to respond... maybe ms will peanalise them ;)
I believe the model number I saw was Y something - Im sure it came with the "DOS" option :D . I made sure to see vista sticker was not on it.
The one I saw was very similar to the first one except it was smaller, lighter, CPU was 2.1 Ghz , came without windows and costed abt 35k. And afaik hdd was also smaller to abt 160 GB.
It seems as notebook and computers become more mass market stuff, they target more of the mass market. I for one would preffer the ideapad im buying tomorrow, in the body of the classic thinkpad :D.
A month ago I saw an old man decide between linksys and SMC wifi router by placing them on the table and comparing the looks for 15 mins.

Even the phone is the worst. My friends at my faculty wanted to buy about 3-5 Dell Laptops for the project. Dell didn't call back to them so they ended buying Toshiba, BenQ s41 and Lenovo Y410. Toshiba is come with Vista Home Premium. The others aren't.
About the laptop you looked. I thought it's IdeaPad Y410.
If you interest the Dell laptop. Here's a telephone number : 026707200. The number on the website isn't Thailand branch Number. It's Penang branch. I think the XPS is very good. It's light weight and look strong. You can also order it without any OS on it. I confirm this because I has the quotation paper from my friend who try to order it.

I had filled dells contact form, they forwarded it to the correct department.. i didnt get a response. Now, I cannot but products from such a company. Even before purchase they dont want to talk to me... What about after sales support :p
All my previous notebook/PC buys have been highly impulsive as i didnt care if it came with license.
