เมื่อเดือนพฤษภาคม 2020 ไมโครซอฟท์เปิดตัว Project Reunion ที่พยายามรวม API แบบ Win32 กับ UWP เข้าด้วยกัน โครงการประกอบด้วยหลายส่วน ทั้งเรื่องจัดระเบียบ API ใหม่ และชุด UI ตัวใหม่คือ WinUI 3.0 และ WebView2

Project Reunion เงียบหายไปสักพักใหญ่ๆ ล่าสุดกลับมาพร้อมการออกเวอร์ชัน 0.5 ที่ระบุว่าพร้อมใช้สร้างแอพจริงๆ แล้ว (production) เพราะผนวกตัว WinUI 3.0 เข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ Reunion (ก่อนหน้านี้คือแยกกันออก) โดยแอพที่สร้างจาก Reunion จะรันได้บน Windows 10 version 1809 ขึ้นไป

ไมโครซอฟท์ยังระบุว่ามีผู้สร้าง UI control หลายราย เช่น Actipro, DevExpress, GrapeCity, Infragistic, Uno กำลังปรับชุด control ของตัวเองให้ใช้ได้กับ WinUI 3.0 เพื่อให้งานของนักพัฒนาง่ายขึ้น

Project Reunion จะออกรุ่น 0.8 ในอีกไม่กี่เดือนข้างหน้า และรุ่นเสถียร 1.0 ภายในปี 2021 นี้ เป้าหมายของรุ่น 1.0 คือรองรับทั้งการสร้างแอพเดสก์ท็อปที่เป็นแพ็กเกจ MSIX (มาแล้วใน 0.5) และแอพเดสก์ท็อปแบบดั้งเดิมที่ไม่ใช้ MSIX (จะมาใน 0.8)

จะได้เลิกบ่น API น้อยกันชักที(ผมก็บ่นนะ...) แต่มานานไปนะถ้ามาสักยุค WP น่าจะยังคงมีขั้วที่สามอยู่...

Keep in mind that some of you may currently be using the WinUI 3 – Project Reunion 0.5 Preview, which has several additional features including support for building WinUI 3 UWP apps, and multi-window support in Desktop apps. You won’t be able to use these preview features or call any of their associated APIs in this new, stable version of WinUI 3. If you’d like to experiment with these features, you can still continue to use that preview release by staying with the preview VSIX. And, coming soon, you can use our 0.8 preview release as we’ll have release and preview builds side by side.
