VMware เปิดตัวแพลตฟอร์มกลุ่มเมฆ Cloud Foundry หวังท้าสู้ Azure, App Engine

ค่าย VMware เปิดตัวแพลตฟอร์มสำหรับการประมวลผลบนกลุ่มเมฆของตัวเองในชื่อ "Cloud Foundry" โดยเรียกมันว่าเป็น "Platform as a Service" (PaaS) ตัวแรกบนกลุ่มเมฆ

แนวคิด PaaS ของ VMware จะรวมบริการต่างๆ ที่จำเป็นสำหรับการสร้างแอพพลิเคชันมาให้เบ็ดเสร็จ ซึ่งจะต่างไปจากพวก Amazon EC2 ที่มีให้เฉพาะองค์ประกอบพื้นฐานอย่างหน่วยประมวลผลหรือพื้นที่เก็บข้อมูล (VMware เรียกมันว่าเป็น infrastructure cloud) แนวคิดของ Cloud Foundry จะไปคล้ายพวก Microsoft Azure หรือ Google App Engine มากกว่า

จุดที่ทำให้ Cloud Foundry แตกต่างจากคู่แข่งอย่าง Azure หรือ App Engine มีสองประการสำคัญ อย่างแรกคือ Cloud Foundry นั้นโอเพนซอร์สด้วยสัญญาอนุญาตแบบ MIT และเปิดให้เข้าถึงซอร์สโค้ดบน GitHub ซึ่ง VMware หวังว่าการเปิดซอร์สจะช่วยดึงดูดนักพัฒนาภายนอกเข้ามามากขึ้น

อย่างที่สองคือ Cloud Foundry รองรับภาษาและเฟรมเวิร์คสำหรับพัฒนาค่อนข้างหลากหลายกว่า Azure (ซึ่งเน้นไปที่ภาษาตระกูล .NET) และ App Engine (Python/Java) โดยภาษาและเครื่องมือที่รองรับได้แก่

  • Java: Spring (เพราะ SpringSource เป็นของ VMware นั่นเอง)
  • Ruby: Rails และ Sinatra
  • JavaScript: Node.js
  • Grails

ในอนาคตจะเพิ่มเครื่องมืออื่นๆ เช่น MongoDB, MySQL, Redis เข้ามาด้วย

บริการประมวลผลบน Cloud Foundry จะแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ระดับ ได้แก่

  • Cloud Foundry รุ่นมาตรฐาน (public cloud) ตอนนี้ Cloud Foundry ยังไม่เปิดให้บริการ แต่ช่วงเบต้าจะให้บริการฟรี ลงทะเบียนรอได้ที่ cloudfoundry.com
  • Cloud Foundry Micro Cloud รุ่นสำหรับนักพัฒนาใช้เองคนเดียว รันในเครื่องตัวเอง
  • Cloud Foundry for the Enterprise and Service Providers สำหรับรันในองค์กรที่ไม่ต้องการเชื่อมต่อภายนอก (private cloud)

สองตัวหลังยังไม่เปิดให้บริการ โดยจะตามมาในอนาคต

ผมคิดว่าสุดท้ายแล้ว ตัวตัดสินว่าใช้แพลตฟอร์มอะไร อาจขึ้นกับเครื่องมือพัฒนานี่ล่ะครับ เช่น ใครถนัด .NET ก็ไปรันบน Azure ให้ครบๆ ชุด ถ้าชอบ Ruby ก็คงต้องเป็น Cloud Foundry หรือไม่ก็ Salesforce อะไรแนวๆ นี้ (ถ้าขยันทำเองหมดก็ไป Amazon ได้อิสระ)

ถ้าพูดถึงในการใช้งานเชิง web service ต้องยอมรับว่า Python กับ Java ยังตามหลังเจ้าตลาดอย่าง PHP, Ruby on Rails, ASP, .. อยู่มาก
ส่วนหนึ่งเพราะตัวภาษาไม่ได้ออบแบบมาสำหรับเวปตั้งแต่แรก รวมทั้ง library ต่างๆ ที่ใช้ก็ยังมีน้อยอยู่ ทำให้ต้องออกแรงเขียนเองเยอะ

ถ้าเป็น amazon ec2 เนี้ยเอาโค้ด php เดิมๆ หรือ cms ที่มีอยู่แล้วไปต่อยอดได้เลย แต่ GAE นี้หนักใจ อยากได้อะไรต้องเขียนใหม่หมด ><

Java นี่ดูท่าจะมีปัญหาเรื่องอนาคต << มีปัญหายังไงเหรอครับ เพราะเท่าที่สังเกตุ Google ก็ใช้ความสำคัญกับภาษา Java ค่อนข้างมากอยู่พอสมควรเครื่องมือต่างๆของ Google ที่เป็น open source เกือบทุกโครงการก็เป็นจาวายกตัวอย่าง Android, Google Web Toolkit, GWT Designer ที่เพิ่งซื้อมา, Google App Engine และที่สำคัญ James A. Gosling ผู้ให้กำหนด Java ก็เข้ามาทำงานกับ Google

อนาคตตัวมันเองผมก็ว่ามันดูจะยังรุ่งโรจน์
แต่การเมืองเนี่ยจะทำให้มันดับ

แต่(1) ก้อคงต้องยอมรับแล ว่าสำหรับ azure แล้ว
ไงพวกนี้ก้อคงเปนลูกเมียน้อย ไม่ได้เท่า .net แหง

แต่(2) python & ruby ก้อยัง active กับ .net อยู่
แม้ไม่ native กับ azure แต่ก้อยังใช้ผ่าน .net ได้
(จิงๆ java ยังได้เลย ยังมิตาย แต่ก้อร้างไปหลาย)

แต่(3) azure vm mode ถึงยังมิออก แต่ก้อมาแน่
เทียบเท่า amazon ดังนั้นแทบจะใช้อะไรทำก้อได้
